What Goes Over Self-Etch Primer?

The wrong coating sequence can create adhesion problems before the job ever reaches clearcoat. Here is the simple rule that keeps the repair on track.

Self-etch primer is designed to promote adhesion and add corrosion protection on properly prepared bare metal. It is not automatically a high-build primer, and it is not a universal shortcut to color. The most common mistake is treating every self-etch product as if it uses the same coating sequence.

Two Products, Two Approved Paths

ProXL PROETCH aerosol

A primer is the required next step.

The PROETCH TDS instructs the user to overcoat after 10-15 minutes at 68°F (20°C) with any ProXL primer.

Bare metal → PROETCH → ProXL primer → sealer (if required) → basecoat → clearcoat

U-POL ACID#8

Most compatible paints may follow.

The ACID#8 TDS states that it may be overpainted with most paints. If the repair needs additional build, apply primer-filler before the topcoat.
